Abalios Eartheater

Geophagus abalios is a medium-sized eartheater restricted to the middle Orinoco and its tributaries in Venezuela. It is a slender, elegant species with rows of iridescent blue-green spots on a silvery background, and breeding males take on an intense blue flush across the head and anterior body that makes them among the most colourful eartheaters in the hobby.

Like all Orinoco eartheaters, it benefits from soft, slightly acidic water and a deep fine-sand substrate. Groups of five or more reduce aggression and allow natural social structures to develop. This species is moderately active and appreciates open midwater swimming space combined with peripheral shelter.

Geophagus abalios is a biparental mouthbrooder with both parents sharing incubation duties. Captive breeding is achievable in well-maintained aquaria with consistent feeding and appropriate spawning triggers such as a slight temperature increase and water change.
