Abei Puffer

Tetraodon abei is one of the smallest and least frequently encountered members of the African Tetraodon lineage, described from the Congo River drainage and only sporadically available through specialist importers. Its pale olive-cream body is covered with small brown spots that merge into irregular blotches toward the flanks. Despite its modest size, it retains the pugnacious temperament characteristic of the genus and should not be trusted with any tankmates. The aquarium should replicate a calm, soft-water African forest-stream biotope with a sandy substrate, driftwood, leaf litter, and gentle filtration. Water quality must be impeccable, as this species is sensitive to ammonia and nitrite fluctuations. Hard-shelled prey is required regularly to maintain a healthy beak throughout the animal's life.
