Acarichthys Heckelii

Acarichthys heckelii — the threadfin cichlid — is a uniquely elegant member of the eartheater tribe (Geophagini) found across the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Unlike most eartheaters it is a cave spawner rather than a mouthbrooder, depositing adhesive eggs in sheltered crevices or under driftwood. Males develop dramatically elongated filamentous extensions to the dorsal and pelvic fins, creating a flowing, almost angelfishlike silhouette. The body is pale silver with turquoise iridescent scaling and a mid-lateral blotch. It inhabits clear to slightly tannin-stained waters over sandy and leaf-littered substrates. In captivity it appreciates a well-planted aquarium with open sandy areas, driftwood caves, and warm, soft, slightly acidic water. A peaceful species that works well in community setups with tetras and calm catfish.
