ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia

ADA Aqua Soil Amazonia is the most widely used and highly regarded planted aquarium substrate in the world, developed by Aqua Design Amano as the foundation of the Nature Aquarium method. Its dark brown-black granules are formed from specially processed Japanese natural soil that is rich in organic matter and essential plant nutrients, delivering a substrate environment that mirrors the nutrient-dense riverbeds of tropical planted biotopes.

Amazonia actively lowers aquarium pH to approximately 6.0–6.8 and reduces water hardness, creating the soft, slightly acidic conditions that most aquatic plants and many tropical fish strongly prefer. This chemistry adjustment happens passively and continuously as the substrate interacts with the water column, reducing the need for chemical pH adjustment in most tap water scenarios.

The substrate maintains its nutrient profile for 12–18 months under normal conditions before requiring supplemental root fertiliser tabs. Over time, the granules compact and the buffering capacity diminishes, at which point a partial or full substrate refresh is recommended for high-tech, demanding plant setups.
