Aequidens pallidus

Aequidens pallidus, the pale acara, is an understated but attractive cichlid from the Guiana Shield lowlands and Venezuelan river systems. As its name suggests, this species has a notably pale, cream to grey base body colour overlaid with faint blue-green iridescent scale tips and a clear, round dark lateral spot on the mid-flank.

This is a cichlid that rewards closer inspection — its subtlety grows more appealing as the fish matures and the blue-green iridescence develops. Breeding condition males develop a slight head hump and more vivid iridescence. The species is considered moderately peaceful for an Aequidens and mixes well with other medium-bodied Guiana Shield species.

A. pallidus is rarely available in the hobby and is primarily of interest to collectors of Aequidens and Guiana Shield cichlids. Its modest water requirements and tolerant temperament make it achievable for the intermediate aquarist.
