African Banded Barb

Found across the river systems of Angola, Zambia, and into Zimbabwe, Barbus fasciolatus inhabits slow-flowing, vegetated streams and floodplain pools. It is one of the more ornamental mid-sized African barbs, with up to ten vertical dark bars overlying a golden-silver body. Males intensify in colour during breeding, taking on a warm brass hue with deeper black banding.

In captivity this species adapts readily to a range of water conditions, making it one of the more forgiving African barbs for beginner aquarists. It appreciates some open swimming space combined with areas of dense vegetation and shelter. A school of eight or more produces particularly impressive schooling behaviour.

Feeding is straightforward — Barbus fasciolatus accepts virtually all standard aquarium foods including flake, micro-pellets, and frozen or live daphnia and bloodworm. It rarely bothers plants, making it a good choice for planted African biotope displays.
