Mastacembelus ellipsifer is a visually distinctive medium-sized spiny eel endemic to the Congo River basin, characterised by rows of elliptical or oval pale spots on a dark brown to near-black body. Occasionally imported alongside Congo basin shipments including Synodontis catfish and Congo tetras, it is a prized and relatively rare addition to the spiny eel hobby.

In its natural habitat it inhabits the rocky and turbid sections of the Congo and its tributaries, sheltering beneath rocks and in crevices during the day. In the aquarium it requires soft, slightly acidic water, deep fine sand, and robust decor. The Congo's characteristically soft, slightly acidic, and warm water chemistry should be replicated as closely as possible for best results.

Earthworms, frozen bloodworm, prawns, and mussel are all consumed readily. It is peaceful toward large robust Congo biotope companions such as large Synodontis, bichirs, and Congo tetras, but will consume small fish. Its rarity and biotope specificity make it a highly sought-after species among African fish specialists.
