Alacrina Apistogramma

Apistogramma alacrina is one of the more rarely exported Colombian dwarf cichlids, hailing from the Orinoco drainage where it inhabits shallow, tannic forest streams. Males are immediately recognizable by a bold, iridescent lateral stripe running from snout to caudal base and an elegant lyre-shaped tail that develops fully in mature specimens.

In the aquarium, A. alacrina thrives in a well-planted setup with plenty of leaf litter, driftwood caves, and subdued lighting that mimics its blackwater home. Pairs are best kept in a species tank or with small, peaceful dither fish to help the cichlids feel secure and show their best coloration.

Breeding follows the typical Apistogramma cave-spawning pattern. The female assumes parental duties, guarding the clutch fiercely while the male defends the broader territory. Soft, acidic water is essential for successful fry development.
