Alenquer Red Discus

The Alenquer Red Discus takes its name from the town of Alenquer on the lower Amazon, a locality historically associated with wild discus displaying unusually rich red-brown body tones and vivid blue fin striping. Captive-bred specimens preserve these locality traits while being adapted to aquarium conditions.

Alenquer Reds require slightly more acidic and softer water than average domestic strains, reflecting the blackwater tributaries where the original wild stock was collected. Their colours deepen in tannin-stained water; peat filtration or the use of Indian almond leaves is recommended.

This strain appeals strongly to enthusiasts seeking a connection to wild discus phenotypes without the significant challenge of maintaining true wild-caught specimens. A group of five or more in a well-planted blackwater biotope is highly rewarding.
