Allpahuayo Apistogramma

Apistogramma allpahuayo is named for the Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve of Peru, a white-sand varillal forest reserve whose unique, mineral-leached soils produce extremely soft, blackwater streams — the exclusive habitat of this remarkable species. Males display extraordinary electric blue body iridescence that seems to glow in the dim light of their tannin-stained home environment.

This species is among the most habitat-specific of all Apistogramma, found only in areas of white-sand forest where water pH can drop below 4.5 and conductivity approaches zero. Replicating these conditions in captivity requires RO water, heavy tannin conditioning, and meticulous chemistry monitoring.
