Altolamprologus calvus 'Black'

Altolamprologus calvus 'Black' is one of the most architecturally distinctive cichlids in the freshwater hobby. Its extreme lateral compression, small mouth, and hard-scaled body are adaptations for squeezing through narrow crevices in rocky substrates to ambush small fish and invertebrates. The Black form presents jet-black flanks covered in rows of iridescent white spots that create a stunning pearl-on-black pattern.

Calvus are solitary and slow-growing; males may take 2–3 years to reach full size. Despite their predatory nature, they are not aggressive toward fish too large to eat and can be kept with most robust Tanganyika species. They spawn in shells or rock crevices in cave-spawning fashion.

Their patient, deliberate hunting behaviour and stunning appearance make them a favourite among experienced aquarists who value observational interest over flashy activity.
