Amatitlania kanna

Amatitlania kanna is found in rivers of Panama and northwestern Colombia, representing the most southerly distribution of the genus. It closely resembles the Convict Cichlid but differs in fine morphological details and its Pacific slope Panamanian distribution. Like all Amatitlania, it is a prolific cave brooder and dedicated parent.

In the aquarium, A. kanna is Hardy and undemanding — it accepts a wide range of prepared foods, tolerates varied water parameters, and breeds readily even in suboptimal conditions. This combination of traits makes it an ideal introduction to Central American cichlid keeping for hobbyists who want an engaging, active fish without complex care requirements.

The species can become aggressive when breeding and should be given ample space and hideouts to reduce conflict with tankmates. Pairs form strong bonds and may remain paired across multiple spawning cycles.
