Ameslan Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla ameslan is a medium-sized pike cichlid endemic to coastal drainages of Suriname, rarely making its way into the European aquarium hobby. Its name honours its place of origin among the Amerindian-influenced river systems of Suriname's interior, and it exhibits the bold lateral banding and spotted dorsal fin characteristic of Guiana Shield pike cichlids.

In the aquarium this species requires space and seclusion. A tank of 180 litres or more with dense driftwood tangles, smooth rounded stones, and a soft sandy substrate best replicates its natural habitat. It is an ambush predator that prefers to lurk among roots and fallen timber, darting out to take prey. Tankmates should be chosen with care as smaller fish will be treated as food.

C. ameslan adapts well to frozen meaty foods including bloodworm, prawn, and mussel, and will generally accept quality cichlid pellets after settling in. Spawning has been achieved by experienced keepers using slightly raised temperatures and a single cave spawning site per pair.
