Ammannia gracilis

Ammannia gracilis is native to West Africa and has been cultivated in the aquarium hobby for decades as a reliable, mid-difficulty red stem plant. Its lance-shaped leaves are arranged opposite each other along a stiff, upright stem, and under high light with iron supplementation they transition from muted olive-green to vivid orange and red — particularly on the leaf undersides and margins.

It is less demanding than Rotala macrandra but more colourful than basic Ludwigia palustris, occupying a useful middle ground for planted tanks with moderate to high lighting. CO2 injection markedly improves compactness and colour saturation. It is tolerant of a wider temperature and pH range than many specialist stems.

Best used as a background accent column in groups of 5–7 stems. Its upright, structured growth makes it well-suited to Dutch-style layouts where defined species groups are maintained.
