Amphilophus flaveolus

Amphilophus flaveolus displays a warm golden-yellow base coloration with variable lateral banding and subtle blue iridescence on the flanks — a pleasing combination that sets it apart from more drably colored Amphilophus species. It inhabits Nicaraguan lake and river systems and is the typical robust, adaptable cichlid well suited to a range of conditions within its natural range.

In the aquarium, this species is somewhat less aggressive than the Red Devil or Midas Cichlid, making it a better candidate for mixed-species Central American setups where aggression management is a concern. It is an active fish that uses the full volume of the tank and appreciates both open swimming areas and rockwork hideouts.

Breeding pairs are good parents and defend their fry vigorously. The golden coloration of this species is enhanced by a diet rich in carotenoids — include foods such as krill, red pepper-based pellets, and blanched sweet potato.
