Amphilophus globosus

Amphilophus globosus is named for its distinctly globose, round-bodied shape — an adaptation reflecting a specialized feeding niche within the Lake Apoyo cichlid radiation. Its deep, compressed body and relatively small fins give it a stout, almost spherical profile unlike any other Nicaraguan cichlid, making it immediately recognizable and a curiosity piece in the aquarium hobby.

In the wild, A. globosus feeds primarily on benthic invertebrates and organic detritus, using its specialized body shape to navigate among rocks and crevices. In the aquarium, it does well with a varied diet of sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, and small crustaceans.

All aquarium specimens are captive-bred, as the species exists in nature only within the tiny Lake Apoyo. Keepers of this species play an indirect role in maintaining an ex-situ population of a naturally rare species.
