Amphilophus sagittae is one of several cichlid species endemic to Lake Apoyo, a volcanic crater lake in Nicaragua. It belongs to a remarkable adaptive radiation that has produced multiple species from a single ancestral population within just a few thousand years — one of the fastest known vertebrate speciation events. A. sagittae is the more slender, open-water form of this radiation, with a streamlined body adapted for pursuing zooplankton and small prey in the water column.

The species displays attractive blue-grey flanks with variable dark lateral banding, and males develop more intense coloration during breeding. Lake Apoyo's water is notably warm, clear, and slightly alkaline — parameters that should be replicated in the aquarium for best results.

Due to its protected status in the wild, all specimens in the hobby are captive-bred, making their conservation value in aquaria significant. A. sagittae is moderately aggressive and territorial when breeding but manageable in properly sized setups.
