Andrao's Snakehead

Channa andrao is a dwarf snakehead species described in 2013 from floodplain habitats in West Bengal, India. It is distinguished from C. bleheri by its more vivid colouration: males display turquoise body patches and bright orange fin margins against a dark base colour. This compact species reaches only 15 cm and is among the most popular dwarf snakeheads in the hobby.

Despite being a snakehead, C. andrao is manageable in a medium-sized aquarium. It is a shy, lurking predator that spends much of its time hiding under driftwood or among dense vegetation. When comfortable it becomes more active and visible. It requires a tight-fitting lid as all snakeheads are prodigious jumpers.

Care is relatively straightforward. Channa andrao is a facultative air-breather and must have unobstructed access to the water surface. Live or frozen fish, shrimp, and earthworms form the basis of its diet. Breeding has been achieved in captivity with pairs forming natural bonds.
