Anthurus Pike Cichlid

Crenicichla anthurus is a medium-sized, relatively slender pike cichlid from the Marowijne (Maroni) and Essequibo river systems of Suriname and Guyana respectively. It is distinguished by an elongated caudal spot that extends slightly onto the caudal fin base and attractive lateral patterning that varies somewhat between populations. Females develop a red-orange belly patch during breeding.

This species inhabits forest rivers with moderate current and soft, slightly acidic water. In captivity it requires clean, moderately soft water, a sandy-substrate tank with shelter in the form of caves and driftwood, and a carnivore diet. Its moderate size makes it more practical than the truly large pike cichlids while still displaying the full pike cichlid personality.

Captive breeding has been documented occasionally. Pairs use cave structures for spawning, with the female guarding eggs and fry while the male patrols the outer boundary. A good choice for the keeper interested in Guianan Crenicichla diversity.
