Apistogramma bitaeniata, the Banded Dwarf Cichlid or Two-striped Apistogramma, is a slender, elongate species native to the western Amazon basin in Peru and Colombia. It is immediately identified by its prominent horizontal black lateral stripe, which runs from the tip of the snout through the eye to the base of the caudal fin. Several distinct colour morphs are known from different river systems, including vivid blue, yellow, and red variants — making bitaeniata one of the more variable and collectible Apistogramma species.
In its natural habitat, A. bitaeniata is found in warm, soft, acidic blackwater streams and flooded forest zones with sandy substrates and dense leaf litter. Males are considerably larger than females and display spectacular colouration during spawning condition, with the dorsal and caudal fins often edged in red or blue depending on the locality variant.
In the aquarium, this species is somewhat more demanding than beginner-friendly Apistogramma such as A. cacatuoides or A. borellii, requiring soft, warm, slightly acidic water and a well-decorated tank with multiple hiding places. It is a cavity spawner, using caves or dense plant cover as breeding sites, with the female taking the primary parental role. This species rewards patient, detail-oriented aquarists with exceptional colour and fascinating cichlid behaviour.
