Apistogramma hongsloi is a small but brilliantly coloured dwarf cichlid native to the Orinoco drainage systems of Colombia and Venezuela. Males are among the most vividly coloured in the genus, displaying a rich red to orange-red body with yellow areas on the abdomen and cheeks, a prominent dark lateral blotch or stripe, and beautifully coloured fins edged in red or orange. Several colour variants have been developed in captivity, with 'Super Red' strains particularly prized by collectors.
Females, as with all Apistogramma, are significantly smaller and display a yellow colouration that intensifies dramatically when in breeding condition or guarding fry. The sexual dimorphism in this species is quite pronounced, making pair identification straightforward.
In its natural habitat, A. hongsloi is found in warm, slow-moving streams and flooded forest areas with soft, acidic water and sandy substrates. It is a cavity spawner, using natural depressions or caves as nesting sites, with the female assuming the primary role in egg and fry care. In the aquarium, it is best suited to experienced beginner or intermediate aquarists comfortable with maintaining soft, slightly acidic water conditions. Its spectacular colouration and interesting behaviour make it a highly rewarding species.
