Apistogramma nijsseni, commonly known as the Panda Dwarf Cichlid, is one of the most immediately recognisable and sought-after species in the entire Apistogramma genus. Endemic to a relatively small area of the Ucayali River system in Peru, it is found in warm, shallow, extremely soft blackwater streams with sandy substrates and dense leaf litter.
The species' common name derives from the female's extraordinary colour pattern when in breeding condition: a vivid golden-yellow body contrasted with jet-black areas on the head and abdomen, creating a strikingly panda-like appearance. This female colouration is among the most dramatic in any Apistogramma species and is one of the reasons A. nijsseni is so highly prized by collectors. Males are somewhat less vividly marked, displaying bluish-grey flanks, a black lateral band, and colourful fin patterning.
In the aquarium, A. nijsseni requires particularly soft and acidic water for optimal health and successful breeding — it is less tolerant of harder or more alkaline conditions than some of its congeners. A well-decorated tank with multiple caves, leaf litter, and dense planting is essential. This species is best suited to intermediate aquarists who can reliably maintain the required water parameters.
