Aponogeton crispus Red Form

Aponogeton crispus is one of the most widely kept aquarium plants in the world, and the red form is a particularly attractive colour variant that develops reddish-brown to copper-toned leaves under good lighting. The leaf margins are tightly wavy — more so than the standard green form — creating a beautifully rippled appearance that catches light effectively in the aquarium background.

Care for the red form follows exactly the same pattern as for standard A. crispus: warm, tropical water, medium light, a nutrient-rich substrate, and periodic dormancy. The red pigmentation is enhanced by bright light and adequate iron supplementation. Under low light the leaves tend to revert to a greenish tone.

A. crispus Red Form is one of the most recommended first-bulb-plant purchases for beginner aquarists. It establishes quickly, grows vigorously, requires no CO2, and produces spectacular, colourful foliage with minimal effort. It is also one of the most frequently flowering Aponogeton species, regularly producing paired white flower spikes above the water surface.
