Aponogeton deformis

Aponogeton deformis is native to the streams of Sri Lanka, where it grows in moderately flowing, warm, soft water. Its name refers to the distinctly irregular, almost deformed appearance of its leaves, which are asymmetric with strongly undulate, almost twisted margins. This unusual leaf structure makes it an immediately recognisable and curiosity-inducing plant among collectors. Leaf colour is mid- to dark-green, and the leaves grow to around 20–40 cm in length.

Care for A. deformis is straightforward compared to many Malagasy species. It is tolerant of slightly harder water than most Aponogeton and can establish well in a range of tropical community aquarium conditions. It does not require CO2 injection and will grow reliably under medium light with basic root fertilisation.

Its moderate stature makes it excellent for midground placement, where its quirky leaf shape can be appreciated without dominating the layout. It is a good entry point for aquarists new to the Aponogeton genus.
