Aponogeton desertorum

Aponogeton desertorum is a winter-growing South African species found in the fynbos region of the Western Cape, where it grows in seasonal pools and streams that fill with cool, fresh water during winter and dry out or warm up in summer. This lifecycle dictates its aquarium care: it thrives in cool, well-oxygenated water between 10 and 20 °C and will struggle or enter dormancy in water warmer than 22 °C.

Its leaves are narrow and lance-shaped, reaching 20–45 cm, and are held in a neat, upright to slightly arching rosette. The plant is well suited to cold-water biotope aquariums themed around the Cape region, unheated outdoor pond containers in temperate climates, and cool-water aquariums kept for goldfish or temperate fish species.

During summer dormancy the bulb should be lifted and stored in a cool, slightly dry location or left in a cold aquarium where temperatures drop naturally. Re-planting in autumn triggers vigorous re-growth.
