Aponogeton euryspathaceus

Aponogeton euryspathaceus is native to southern Africa where it grows in seasonal rivers, vleis, and pans that experience significant fluctuations in water level throughout the year. It produces broad, strap-shaped leaves with strongly undulate, ruffled margins that make it one of the more visually impressive southern African species. The white spathe produced when flowering is notably broad compared to other Aponogeton species.

In cultivation, A. euryspathaceus is moderately demanding but rewarding. It prefers slightly alkaline, harder water than typical Malagasy species and tolerates a wider temperature range, including cooler water down to around 16 °C, which makes it suitable for temperate aquariums and outdoor pond features in mild climates.

After flowering, the plant may enter a dormancy period during which leaves die back; this is normal and the bulb should be left in place or moved to a cool, slightly moist location. Re-emergence occurs when conditions improve.
