Aponogeton guillotii

Aponogeton guillotii is one of several Malagasy Aponogeton species that remain relatively unknown in the hobby compared to the headline species such as fenestralis and longiplumulosus. It produces lance-shaped, translucent mid-green leaves with a gently rippled margin and a smooth, untextured surface that gives it a clean, refined appearance. Leaf length typically reaches 25–45 cm in mature specimens.

Care requirements are broadly similar to other Malagasy species: soft, slightly acidic water, a nutrient-rich substrate, and moderate light. It is somewhat less demanding than the most difficult Malagasy species and will tolerate a broader range of conditions, making it a reasonable entry point for aquarists interested in collecting the genus from Madagascar.

A. guillotii looks best planted as a solitary specimen in the midground or rear-centre, where its smooth, translucent foliage provides an interesting textural contrast to more heavily textured or coloured background plants.
