Aponogeton jacobsenii

Aponogeton jacobsenii is a rarely cultivated East African species found in the rivers and streams of Tanzania and neighbouring regions. It produces long, narrow, strap-like leaves with a smooth surface and faint longitudinal venation that gives the leaves a slightly ribbed appearance under good lighting. The leaves form an outward-arching fountain rosette and can reach 30–60 cm in mature specimens.

This species benefits from soft to moderately hard water and a nutrient-rich substrate. It is not especially demanding by Aponogeton standards — less fussy than the Malagasy species — but rewards good husbandry with steady, confident growth and a striking background presence. A seasonal dormancy can be expected once or twice a year.

Because of its rarity in the hobby, A. jacobsenii is primarily of interest to Aponogeton collectors and aquarists building East African biotope displays. It pairs naturally with Vallisneria species and broadleaf Crinum as background elements.
