Aponogeton junceus

Aponogeton junceus is an unusual South African species that breaks the typical Aponogeton mould by producing cylindrical to linear, rush-like leaves that stand stiffly upright rather than the broad, undulate strap leaves associated with most of the genus. This gives it a markedly different silhouette — more akin to a Baumea or Eleocharis than a typical Aponogeton — which makes it a highly distinctive accent in any planted aquarium.

In nature it grows in the shallow, sandy margins of South African rivers and wetlands. It tolerates a wider temperature range than tropical Aponogeton species, performing well in cooler water between 16–24 °C, and is therefore suitable for temperate or seasonally cool aquariums as well as outdoor water features in mild climates.

A. junceus is relatively undemanding and grows at a moderate pace. It appreciates a sandy or fine-gravel substrate into which its roots can penetrate deeply, and responds well to periodic root fertilisation.
