Aponogeton natans

Aponogeton natans is one of the most widespread and widely cultivated members of the genus, distributed across the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka where it grows in ponds, rice paddies, slow rivers, and irrigation canals. It produces long-petiolate, broad oval leaves that float at the water surface, and from these float fragrant white flower spikes that are among the most pleasant-scented of any aquatic plant in the hobby.

Care is undemanding compared to most Aponogeton species. It tolerates a wide range of water conditions including moderate hardness, a broad pH range, and temperatures from tropical down to around 18 °C. It performs reliably without CO2 and grows well under medium light. The floating leaves require an open water surface, making A. natans suitable only for aquariums and ponds without a sealed cover or extensive surface vegetation.

Outdoor container ponds and open-top aquariums are ideal settings. In very warm water above 28 °C the plant may experience leaf die-back, so position away from intense heat sources.
