Aponogeton tofus

Aponogeton tofus is one of the rarest and most unusual species in the genus, named for the distinctive tofus-like (pumice-like) texture of its leaf surfaces, which are studded with small raised bumps quite unlike the smooth or simply undulate leaves of other Aponogeton. This texture is immediately apparent and gives the plant a sculptural, almost geological quality that is entirely unique in the planted aquarium hobby.

As a Malagasy endemic, A. tofus requires soft, slightly acidic water and a nutrient-rich substrate for sustained growth. It grows slowly, making it most suitable for aquarists with patience who enjoy studying the development of unusual plant forms. CO2 supplementation at moderate levels benefits leaf quality and growth rate.

Specimens are rarely available commercially; when found they command a premium price and are snapped up quickly by dedicated Aponogeton collectors. Single-specimen planting in a well-lit aquarium showcases the remarkable leaf texture to best effect.
