Aponogeton undulatus is native to India and Southeast Asia, growing in warm, shallow ponds, rice paddies, and rivers. It is one of the most widely cultivated Aponogeton species in the hobby and well deserves its popularity — the plant is vigorous, adaptable, and produces attractive long, bright-green leaves with gently undulating margins from a corm that can remain productive for years without dormancy in tropical conditions. The leaves can reach 20–40 cm in length and sway gracefully in gentle current.
This species is an excellent choice for planted tanks of all styles and suits beginners and experts alike. It performs well without CO2 injection or special substrates, though it benefits greatly from root tabs near the corm and periodic liquid fertilisation. Unlike some Aponogeton species, A. undulatus rarely requires a dormancy period in tropical aquarium conditions, maintaining continuous growth throughout the year.
Under good conditions it will produce branched flower spikes that reach the water surface, and the plant propagates by producing small daughter plants on the flower spike — a charming and convenient reproductive strategy.
