Arcus Leporinus

Leporinus arcus is among the most visually striking of all Leporinus species, named for the bold arching dark stripe that sweeps along its mid-lateral line against a bright yellow-cream background. This high-contrast pattern makes it one of the most desirable large South American characins for the ornamental trade. It originates from Amazonian river systems in Peru and Brazil.

Like its relatives, L. arcus is active, bold, and primarily herbivorous. It requires a large tank with powerful filtration, open swimming space, and a secure lid. It is somewhat territorial with conspecifics and best kept in odd-numbered groups or singly in mixed-species setups with large, robust companions.

Feed a predominantly plant-based diet: herbivore pellets, algae wafers, spirulina flake, and regular blanched vegetables are essential. Frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp round out nutrition. Consistent water quality and regular water changes are important for long-term health.
