Argyrostictus Eartheater

Geophagus argyrostictus is one of the more visually striking members of the genus, its golden-bronze flanks peppered with numerous small silver-blue iridescent spots that give the species its name (meaning 'silver-spotted'). Native to the upper Rio Branco in Brazil and the Essequibo system of Guyana, it requires soft to moderately soft acidic conditions matching its blackwater origins.

This species is somewhat less commonly available than the more widespread Geophagus but rewards the effort of sourcing it with outstanding colouration in well-maintained conditions. Like its relatives, it is a substrate-sifter that requires deep fine sand and produces significant particulate matter requiring efficient mechanical filtration.

In groups it displays fascinating social interactions including fin-spreading displays and subtle colour changes that signal dominance. A diet rich in varied frozen and live foods unlocks the full potential of its spotting pattern.
