Armoured Mystus Catfish

Mystus armatus is a moderately sized bagrid catfish widely distributed from the Indian subcontinent through mainland Southeast Asia. Its slender, slightly compressed body is patterned with irregular grey-brown mottling that provides effective camouflage against sandy and silty riverbeds. Like all Mystus, it bears four pairs of long barbels used for chemosensory foraging in low-visibility conditions.

In the aquarium, M. armatus is straightforward to keep, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and accepting a varied diet. It is primarily nocturnal, hiding in crevices or under driftwood by day and becoming active after lights-out. Despite a semi-aggressive rating, it is not truly territorial and can coexist with fish of similar or larger size, though small fish may be eaten.

This species is rarely seen in the trade under its correct name, often appearing as generic 'Asian catfish' in import shipments. It is an excellent choice for keepers seeking a manageable, interesting bagrid without committing to the scale required by the larger Hemibagrus or Sperata species.
