Arnoldichthys spilopterus, the African Red-eye Tetra, is the sole member of its genus and one of the most charismatic schooling tetras from West Africa. Adults are distinctly large for a tetra, reaching 8 cm, with bodies that glow with a blend of gold, blue, and green iridescence depending on the angle of light. The vivid red upper iris — the defining common name feature — is prominent and striking even across an aquarium.

This species thrives in groups of eight or more in a well-planted aquarium with open central swimming space. It is an active, fast-swimming fish and appreciates moderate current and good oxygenation replicating its Niger Delta river habitat. Soft to moderately hard water across a wide pH range is acceptable, making it one of the more adaptable West African tetras.

Arnoldichthys spilopterus is a willing feeder accepting virtually all standard aquarium foods. Its larger size means it also relishes frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp alongside regular flake and pellet feeding. It coexists well with medium cichlids, robust catfish, and other large African tetras.
