The Arulius Barb is one of the more impressive cyprinids available in the hobby, native to the clear, fast-flowing rivers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka in southern India. Males of this species develop extraordinarily elongated dorsal fin rays as they mature, lending a dramatic, sail-like profile that makes them instantly distinguishable from similar barb species. The body is silver-gold with three to four prominent dark vertical bars and reddish fin accents, creating a bold, attractive pattern. Females are smaller and lack the elongated fin rays but share the barred body pattern. Growing to 12 cm, the Arulius Barb requires a substantially sized aquarium — a minimum of 150 liters with good open swimming space and moderate current to replicate its native stream habitat. It is a semi-aggressive schooling species that should be kept in groups of six or more to distribute any intraspecific aggression. It may bully smaller, more timid fish, so tankmates should be robust and able to hold their own. The Arulius Barb is hardy and adaptable within its preferred cooler temperature range, making it an interesting choice for aquarists who want a striking, active species for a larger community or species tank.
