Assam Barb

Dawkinsia assimilis inhabits fast-flowing streams and rivers in the Western Ghats of southern India, where it shares habitat with other Dawkinsia species and the related Denison Barb. It is distinguished from its congeners by the pattern and intensity of its vertical body bars and the extent of red colouration on the fins. Adult males are particularly striking, with deep black bars on a gold-silver body and vivid red highlighting the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins.

Care requirements are essentially identical to other Dawkinsia species: clean, well-oxygenated, moderately fast-flowing water at tropical temperatures. This species is rarely seen in the hobby outside specialist circles, making it a prized acquisition for collectors of Indian stream fish. Groups of five or more display the best colouration and natural schooling behaviour.

Dawkinsia assimilis is an eager omnivore that thrives on a varied diet of quality pellets, flake, and frozen invertebrates. Its peaceful temperament and active schooling make it an ideal centrepiece for a Western Ghats biotope aquarium.
