Astatotilapia nubila is one of the most broadly distributed haplochromine cichlids in the Lake Victoria basin, found across a wide range of habitat types from rocky shores to vegetated margins and open sandy zones. This ecological flexibility translates into notable hardiness in the aquarium — A. nubila tolerates a wider range of water conditions than more habitat-specialised Victorian species and is forgiving of husbandry imperfections.

Males develop attractive blue-grey nuptial colouration at maturity, which intensifies during breeding activity. The species is a maternal mouthbrooder and breeds readily in captivity, making it an excellent starting species for aquarists new to Victorian cichlids. Its moderate aggression level is manageable with standard cichlid tank management.

A. nubila's wide range means it has encountered many ecological pressures from the Nile Perch introduction and eutrophication — it is considered one of the more resilient survivors in the decimated Victorian cichlid flock. Keeping and breeding this species contributes to captive representation of the lake's cichlid diversity.
