Aulonocara ethelwynnae

Aulonocara ethelwynnae is a smaller, more delicate peacock cichlid collected from Nkhata Bay on the western shore of Lake Malawi. Named after the celebrated British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas, who made major contributions to the taxonomy of African cichlids, this species displays a more understated but pleasing colouration compared to larger Aulonocara species — males show blue-green body colouration with yellowish flanks and a subtle iridescence.

In its natural habitat, A. ethelwynnae occupies sandy and rocky interface zones at moderate depths in Nkhata Bay, hunting small invertebrates using the Aulonocara sensory-hunting technique. Its smaller size means it is slightly more vulnerable to aggression from larger tank mates than species like A. jacobfreibergi.

In the aquarium, this species rewards careful management with graceful behaviour and interesting feeding displays. It is best kept in a dedicated peacock-and-hap community where it will not be bullied by larger or more aggressive cichlids. A well-filtered, alkaline aquarium with quality nutrition maintains it in excellent condition.
