Aulonocara hansbaenschi 'Chitande'

Aulonocara hansbaenschi 'Chitande' is the Chitande locality collection of the Red Flush Peacock, a species closely related to A. baenschi. The Chitande form is distinguished by particularly vivid orange-red coloration on the chest, belly, and pelvic fins, which contrasts dramatically against the deep metallic blue of the body. This red-to-blue contrast is among the most striking in the genus.

The species uses the characteristic Aulonocara hunting strategy of hovering over sandy substrate and using its lateral line to detect buried invertebrates. In the aquarium this behavior is easily observed and requires fine sand to be fully expressed. Water quality is critical for maintaining the intensity of the red-flush coloration.

Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate broods. Females are silver-grey and inconspicuous. A highly recommended species for Malawi Peacock collections, offering a vivid red coloration component that complements the predominantly blue-gold colors of most other Aulonocara.
