Aurantimaculata Snakehead

Channa aurantimaculata, the Orange-spotted Snakehead, is one of the most visually dramatic members of the genus. Native to the clear, cool streams of the Brahmaputra drainage in Assam, it grows to around 40 cm and develops a striking pattern of iridescent orange-tipped scales scattered across a dark olive-brown body, giving an almost bejewelled appearance in mature individuals. The fins are large and ornate, particularly the dorsal.

This is a species for dedicated specialist keepers only. It requires very large, well-filtered aquariums, cool water conditions reflecting its Assam hill-stream origins, and meaty food items. Despite its aggressive reputation, pairs form stable bonds and the species practices biparental care of eggs and fry — a remarkable behaviour not universal across the genus.

Breeding in captivity is documented but demands a large tank, an established compatible pair, and careful management. The fish are capable of inflicting serious bites when handled and lids must be completely secure as they are powerful jumpers.
