Australian Lungfish

Neoceratodus forsteri is endemic to the Burnett and Mary River systems of Queensland, where it is fully protected by Australian law. Unlike African and South American lungfishes it cannot aestivate, retains functional gills, and uses its lung only as a supplement in poorly oxygenated conditions. Its large paddle-like paired fins are thought to be homologous to tetrapod limbs. It is extraordinarily long-lived — individuals in captivity have survived over 80 years.
