Axelrod's Cory

Corydoras axelrodi was named in honour of the legendary fishkeeping author and publisher Herbert R. Axelrod. It is a relatively small and delicate species from the Meta River drainage in eastern Colombia, where it inhabits slow-moving, warm, blackwater-influenced streams over fine sandy bottoms.

The body is pale tan with a scattering of small dark spots and a faint iridescent sheen. The dorsal region carries a slightly darker wash. It can be difficult to distinguish from related Colombian species without close examination, adding to its appeal among collectors who enjoy the challenge of species identification.

Because it originates from warm, soft, slightly acidic waters, C. axelrodi requires more careful husbandry than some hardier cories. Water quality must be consistently high and temperature stable. Keep in groups of at least six, feed varied sinking foods, and provide a soft substrate to protect the delicate barbels.
