Balloon Molly

The Balloon Molly is a captive variety of Poecilia sphenops in which selective breeding for a kinked spine and shortened body axis has produced a distinctive balloon-like round body profile that is markedly different from the standard molly form. The belly is pronounced and the fish swims with a characteristic waddling motion.

Despite the unusual body form, Balloon Mollies are hardy and prolific and are available in all the standard molly colour variants including black, dalmatian, white, yellow, and gold. They are a popular choice for hobbyists who want a visually distinctive livebearer with minimal extra care requirements.

Some keepers note that balloon-body fish may be slightly more susceptible to swim bladder issues, particularly if overfed, but this can be managed with moderate feeding and a varied diet.
