Balzanii Eartheater

Gymnogeophagus balzanii is one of the largest members of its genus and one of the few cichlids that can thrive in truly temperate aquaria. Native to the Paraná-Paraguay river system, it experiences significant seasonal temperature variation in the wild and is perfectly adapted to cooler conditions that would stress tropical cichlids. Breeding males develop a pronounced nuchal hump and a vivid display of colour.

This species is straightforward to keep: it accepts a wide range of water parameters, standard cichlid foods, and adapts to a variety of tank setups. The deep fine-sand substrate is still important for its sifting behaviour, but it is less demanding about substrate depth than tropical eartheaters. It is an excellent species for unheated or lightly heated aquaria in temperate climates.

Gymnogeophagus balzanii is a substrate-spawning open brooder in which both parents guard eggs and fry. Breeding in captivity is well-documented and relatively straightforward. It is an ideal eartheater for hobbyists new to the group.
