Banded Chilatherina

Chilatherina fasciata is found in the Lake Sentani area and associated river systems of West Papua, Indonesia, and is one of the more readily recognisable members of the genus due to its relatively banded or barred appearance. While the banding is not as bold as in some cichlids, dominant males in breeding condition show a series of alternating lighter and darker vertical marks along the flanks that contrast with their overall silver-blue iridescence and orange-red finnage.

This species shares habitat with several other West Papuan rainbowfish, including Chilatherina sentaniensis and Glossolepis incisus, and can be maintained with these species in a large biotope-style aquarium. It prefers moderately hard, slightly alkaline water and requires a well-maintained, spacious tank. Like most larger rainbowfish, it benefits from brisk water movement and high dissolved oxygen levels.

Chilatherina fasciata is infrequently available in the hobby but is maintained by dedicated rainbowfish enthusiasts. It breeds in the standard manner and produces moderate-sized spawns when in good condition.
