Banded Myloplus

Myloplus torquatus is a large, attractive pacu from South American river systems displaying a characteristic dark lateral banding or collar pattern that gives it its species name. The red-tinged fins add warm contrast to the silver body, making this one of the more visually engaging Myloplus species available to specialist aquarists. Mature specimens can reach 37 cm and the banding tends to be most vivid in juvenile and sub-adult fish.

Housing this species requires a commitment to serious large-fish keeping: at least 1000 litres of well-filtered, soft to moderately hard water, regular water changes, and an unplanted or artificially planted aquarium. Strong water circulation mimicking the river habitats it occupies in the wild is appreciated. Like all Myloplus, it produces heavy waste and water quality must be actively managed.

Myloplus torquatus is peaceful with other large, non-aggressive fish and can be mixed with other Myloplus or Myleus species, large geophagines, or peaceful plecostomus species. Its bold patterning and impressive size make it a natural centrepiece species in a specialist large South American fish display.
