Banded Spiny Eel

This banded domestic form of Macrognathus aral is selectively traded for its clearly defined dark crossband pattern, which is more regular and striking than in typical wild-caught individuals. The alternating dark and pale banding gives it a clean, graphic appearance well suited to display in planted community aquariums.

As a form of the hardy and adaptable M. aral species, it shares that species' tolerance for a wide range of water parameters, making it an excellent choice for community tanks with standard tropical conditions. It buries itself readily in soft sand and emerges at dusk to forage, making it most visible in the hour before and after feeding.

Bloodworm, tubifex, earthworms, and sinking pellets are all accepted. It is peaceful toward medium to large community fish and can be kept alongside barbs, loaches, larger tetras, and catfish without conflict. A secure lid is the most critical requirement given its propensity for nocturnal exploration.
