Schistura balteata is one of the more vividly coloured members of the notoriously species-rich genus Schistura, displaying a series of alternating rust-orange and deep brown-black transverse bands along its cylindrical body. It inhabits the rocky, fast-flowing hill streams of Myanmar and Thailand, where it darts between pebbles and boulder undersides in well-oxygenated, clear current. The species is one of the more commonly encountered Schistura in the aquarium trade, valued for its attractive colouration and moderate maintenance requirements.
In the aquarium, S. balteata is active and engaging but displays the territorial boldness characteristic of most Schistura species — individuals will establish feeding territories and briefly chase conspecifics away from favoured spots. A group of four or more in a spacious tank minimises individual stress and allows natural behavioural hierarchies to form without serious injury.
The species tolerates a slightly broader range of conditions than extreme hillstream specialists, making it suitable for tropical hillstream biotopes that may not maintain temperatures below 22 °C. Water must nonetheless be clean, well-oxygenated, and moderately flowing — still water quickly deteriorates the health of any Schistura species.
